I enjoy poetry very much, from many different authors.
But when I stumbled upon this author I was thrilled.
It is obvious she has a great love for Hawaii.
And her words reflect exactly
how I feel about Heaven On Earth.
I doubt anyone could have said it more eloquently or
more to the point.
If you share this same love, then I am sure these poems
will strike a cord with you.
Enjoy!
Haole Chick
Keith says I'm a haole chick. Yes, I know it's true
Too fair skin, turned up nose, and my eyes are blue.
I don't have to much rhythm, can't hula a bit.
Don't know this end of a pahu from that.
Can't string a lei, it all falls apart.
My lauhala doesn't look like a mat. Or a hat!!
To speak Hawaiian like a native, I'll never achieve.
Only 5 vowels???? This I don't believe!
There must be six "a's" and three or four "e's".
Line up several "i's".
Now pronounce THAT with ease!
Since I am not a brownie, why do I long
to be somewhere I really don't belong?
I suppose I don't really have to pretend.
But my love of this place is really hard to comprehend.
Here on the mainland, I'm sometimes heart sick...
Waiting to be there is hard on this haole chick.
Where I Want To Be
Some want to be in Paris.
When Springtime fills the air.
Top walk along the Seine
with nary a Springtime care
Others say,
"London. Thats where I want to be!"
Still others climb on broad,
sail off on the deep blue sea.
Not Me. No, none of those.
Not one of those I'd propose.
I want to be in Hawai'i
Where the fragrant flowers grow.
Where the palm trees dust the sky.
Where the soft trade winds blow.
I want to burrow in the sand.
Let the waves grab at my feet.
Feel the warm and then the cool.
Hear the surf's pulsating beat.
I want to stand on the Pali
and look out across the Plain.
To see Kamehameha and his men again.
To be in Hale'iewa
when the lanterns float to sea.
To visit the Urasenke
for a ceremony of tea.
And on May Day, "Don's" Lei Day,
off to the Shell I'll go,
to see The Caz and all their troupe
put on their famous show.
I know someday I'll travel far
off to those other places.
I'll see new sights and hear new sounds.
Take note of strange new faces.
But in all the world, I must go
to my personal Shangra-La.
To my islands of sun
and flowers and trees.
Where the password is Aloha.
Why Waikiki?
OK, here's the truth, I admit it.
I love Waikiki.
And yes, I've been to the others.
I simply know what suits me.
Sunrise over Diamond Head,
Sunsets down Ewa Way.
Trade winds to cool your brow.
At the end of a faaaabulous day.
The world passing by as you sit
In the Moana's comfy white rockers.
From locals out on the town,
to the world's most exotic travelers.
Strolling Kalakaua on any given day,
you'll find what you're looking for.
From high fashion at Liberty House,
to everything else at an ABC Store.
You'll never be bored.
You can take my advice,
there's always something to do.
For this is paradise.
Waikiki is romance, it's sunshine
It's love
It's warm sand between your toes
and pure blue sky above.
Waikiki is walking beneath
that blue sky
and feeling it rain
and wondering why?
It's the mist from the Ko'olau's.
Gently touching your face.
A warm blanket of dew
feels like an embrace.
It's a sunrise walk from The Royal
to the zoo.
A hot Kona Coffee in hand
Diamond Head before you,
early surfers on your right....
Are you beginning to see?
Do you yet understand?
There's no place like this place.
It holds everything for me.
There is no place else that
I would rather be.
